There will be days of inclement weather, but then comes sunshine, clear air, and spectacular views. Many tourists stay away from wine country in January, so all the better to travel to Napa Valley, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and more. There are plenty of fun activities to do in January in wine country. You will get a chance to see part of the wine making process as well as how they store and manage the wines as they age. Some very fun Things to do in wine country in January I love this time of year because many of them decorate their caves with some holiday lights. There are more than a dozen wineries that offer cave tours. Cave Tours: The best time to head into the caves is during the holiday season. Other brands in this mall include Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, and Tommy Hilfiger.ĥ. Find great deals on top brands such as Cole Haan, Nike, and Gap. Napa Premium Outlets: Go shopping this holiday season at the Napa Premium Outlets. Find additional events this December in Napa.Ĥ. They include a Christmas tree lighting celebration, a visit from Santa, and discounts at their local stores. Calistoga Holiday Events: Toward the beginning of the month, you will find some great holiday events in Calistoga. The wineries are not too busy during this time and it is a relaxing time to learn more about the local wines. Wine Tasting: The best thing to do in December is, of course, wine tasting. During the open houses, they often offer discounts on their wines as well as a few tasty treats.Ģ. Holiday Open Houses: You will find dozens of wineries in Napa Valley which offer open houses around the holidays. Athletic shoes are fine as long as they are well maintained. Wearing comfortable, flat shoes will make the experience a lot more enjoyable. Very few have places to sit as you taste. Most tastings are done indoors during this time of year on cement floors. Shoes: Make sure to bring along one or two pairs of comfortable shoes. You will find most people in jeans during the tastings. I recommend nicer jeans or darker colored casual pants. Pants/Jeans: Jeans and casual pants are common in Napa. You might end of leaving this in the car, but it is nice to have along earlier in the day as the temperatures are a bit cooler. I also recommend a light to medium weight jacket. Lighter long sleeves also make it easier to taste as you are not dragging your sleeves around on the counters. I typically find anything bulkier or heavier will be too warm. Shirt/Jacket: For men, I also recommend light weight long sleeved shirts. Flatter shoes will make for a more pleasant overall experience. Due to the rain this time of year, anything with heels might get a little dirty. Some wineries also have dirt parking lots. You will find very little seating inside the wineries, so you will be standing for up to an hour at each winery as you taste. Shoes: I recommend shoes with low heels or that are flat. It will also keep you a little warmer at night. This will keep your legs warm as you come in and out of wineries during the day. If I wear a dress, I like to wear a longer dress or add leggings. I tend to stay away from ripped jeans or those that look like they are in disrepair. Jeans are okay as long as they are clean and look nice. I like to wear darker clothing too just in case I spill a little (or a little wine is spilled on me). Pants/Jeans/Dresses: I usually stick to jeans or casual pants. I will sometimes leave this in the car during tasting, but it is nice to have something a little warmer when I get back into the car or have to walk outside for a longer distance. Along with my long-sleeved shirts, I usually bring along a medium weight jacket. Plus, I tend to warm up a little as I sample wines. I do not like to wear anything too heavy as the indoor temperatures are often pleasant. Shirt/Jacket: I usually wear a lighter, long sleeved shirt during this time. Most of the activities and events in Napa are casual, so jeans, T-shirts, and athletic shoes are widely accepted. I typically like to layer my clothing so I can remove warmer items when I step into the tasting rooms. With the Napa weather in December, you will want to bring some warm clothing along with you.

Select the items you want to recover and click “Restore.”.Launch Time Machine and navigate to the deleted items.Connect the Time Machine backup media to your Mac.Using Time Machine: Time Machine, a built-in backup and recovery tool on your Mac, offers the following procedure for restoring the Trash from a Time Machine backup:.Here are several ways to recover files from backups: Keep in mind that your backups may not include recently created or modified data. The key here is whether the deleted files are included in your backup. If you prefer not to use specialized data recovery software, you might still have a chance to recover your emptied Trash, provided you regularly back up your Mac. Recovering Emptied Trash on Mac without Software Continued use makes it more likely that the files you want to recover will be replaced by new data, making them unrecoverable even with data recovery software. If you accidentally empty the Trash, stop using your Mac immediately. However, it’s crucial to understand that once the files get overwritten, recovery becomes nearly impossible unless you have a backup. These files are only truly gone when new data overwrites them.Īs long as the data hasn’t been overwritten, there’s a chance to recover it using specialized data recovery software. What happens when you empty the Trash is that the operating system disconnects the pathways that allow access to these files, but the actual data remains on your storage device. To recover the entire contents of the Trash folder, use the keyboard shortcut “Cmd+A” to select every file in the Trash folder, then right-click on the selection and choose “Put Back.”Įmptying the Trash on your Mac may make it seem like you’ve permanently deleted your files, but in reality, they aren’t immediately removed from your storage. If you want to recover a file, right-click on it and select “Put Back.” The file will be returned to its original location on your Mac.Click the Trash icon in the dock to open the Trash folder on your Mac.Similar to the importance of emptying your Mac’s Trash, to manage storage effectively, understanding how to recover deleted files on macOS plays a crucial role in safeguarding your valuable data. Method 2: Click the Trash icon in the Dock and select “Empty Trash.” Confirm the action to free up space.Method 1: Use the keyboard shortcuts Command+Shift+Delete and Command+Delete to move files to the Trash and subsequently empty it.Here’s how to empty your Trash folder through various methods: Click on the Trash icon, and a Finder window will open, displaying the contents of your Trash folder.Įmptying your Trash folder is a crucial step in optimizing your Mac’s storage and maintaining its performance. You should see an icon in the shape of a trash can in your Dock. This action will take you directly to the Trash folder. In the dialog box, type “Trash” and press Enter. This key combination will open a “Go to Folder” dialog. On your keyboard, press the “Command+Shift+G” keys simultaneously. The Trash is no longer visibly located on the desktop, but you can access it via the following methods: It’s essential to know where it’s situated to effectively manage your digital waste. Files placed in the Trash remain recoverable until you decide to empty it. The Trash folder on macOS serves as a temporary repository for files you no longer need. What Is the Trash Folder on a Mac and Where Can You Find It? The Trash folder on Mac is your digital wastebasket, like the Recycle Bin on Windows. When using a Mac, managing your digital clutter is essential. Physically it affects your digestive system. (See "Imaging procedures and their approximate effective radiation doses.") These studies show a slightly but significantly increased risk of cancer in those exposed to the blasts, including a group of 25,000 Hiroshima survivors who received less than 50 mSv of radiation - an amount you might get from three or more CT scans. Most of what we know about the risks of ionizing radiation comes from long-term studies of people who survived the 1945 atomic bomb blasts at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But we have no clinical trials to guide our thinking about cancer risk from medical radiation in healthy adults. We've long known that children and teens who receive high doses of radiation to treat lymphoma or other cancers are more likely to develop additional cancers later in life. Taking these into account, millisieverts describe what's called the "equivalent dose." These units, the ones most commonly used in comparing imaging procedures, take into account the biological effect of radiation, which varies with the type of radiation and the vulnerability of the affected body tissue. That's where the sievert (Sv) and millisievert (mSv) come in. Measuring their impact on human tissues and health is more difficult. But Geiger counters detect only the intensity of radioactive emissions. If you mention the measurement of radiation, many people will recall the classic Geiger counter with its crescendo of clicks. CT alone accounts for 24% of all radiation exposure in the United States, according to a report issued in March 2009 by the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements. The proportion of total radiation exposure that comes from medical sources has grown from 15% in the early 1980s to 50% today. (A millisievert is a measure of radiation exposure see "Measuring radiation.")Įxposure to ionizing radiation from natural or background sources hasn't changed since about 1980, but Americans' total per capita radiation exposure has nearly doubled, and experts believe the main reason is increased use of medical imaging. But the average is 3 millisieverts (mSv) per year. How much of this so-called background radiation you are exposed to depends on many factors, including altitude and home ventilation. We're exposed to small doses of ionizing radiation from natural sources all the time - in particular, cosmic radiation, mainly from the sun, and radon, a radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, water, and building materials. Ionizing radiation can damage DNA, and although your cells repair most of the damage, they sometimes do the job imperfectly, leaving small areas of "misrepair." The result is DNA mutations that may contribute to cancer years down the road. The radiation you get from x-ray, CT, and nuclear imaging is ionizing radiation - high-energy wavelengths or particles that penetrate tissue to reveal the body's internal organs and structures. But are we courting future public health problems? Exposure to ionizing radiation on the rise The benefits of these tests, when they're appropriate, far outweigh any radiation-associated cancer risks, and the risk from a single CT scan or nuclear imaging test is quite small. CT scanning and nuclear imaging have revolutionized diagnosis and treatment, almost eliminating the need for once-common exploratory surgeries and many other invasive and potentially risky procedures. Over 80 million CT scans are performed in the United States each year, compared with just three million in 1980. But many experts are concerned about an explosion in the use of higher radiation–dose tests, such as CT and nuclear imaging. For most women, there's very little risk from routine x-ray imaging such as mammography or dental x-rays. Patients want to know if radiation from mammograms, bone density tests, computed tomography (CT) scans, and so forth will increase their risk of developing cancer. There's always questions about radiation exposure from medical imaging. Reportedly, some Mac users have switched to just because of its extremely good stability. Its success relies on the capacity of sterile males to mate with wild females and therefore requires a sufficient number of sterile males of good quality to compete with wild males 28, 29. The SIT is an environment-friendly, species-specific technique releases sterile male insects into a target area which will compete with their wild counterparts to mate with wild females, resulting in a decline of the target insect pest population 27. However, these techniques, involve releasing laboratory-produced (sterile) mosquitoes into a target field site, and their effectiveness may be affected by the extent of adult mosquito predation. Genetic control techniques, such as the sterile insect technique (SIT), are promising tools as components of area-wide integrated management of mosquitoes. Therefore, investigating adult mosquito predation would offer more biological control options and is also vital to define its potential interactions with genetic control. More broadly, adult mosquitoes may be an essential part of the food resources of terrestrial predators of arthropods such as mantises, known to prey on small flying insects 25, 26. Adult mosquito predators also include bats 21, dragon flies 22, frogs 23, birds 24. Although attention was mainly given to mosquito pre-imago stage predation, recent studies demonstrated that predators of adult mosquitoes, such as spiders and geckos, have a high potential to reduce mosquito populations 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Predators with high predation rates on mosquito larvae and pupae include fish 10, 11, odonate young instars 12, other mosquito species 13, amphibians 14, and copepods 15. Mainly, predators of the mosquito aquatic life stages were considered 7, 8, 9. Early mosquito control approaches included the use of natural predators. Natural enemies are well known in biocontrol for their beneficial actions of reducing the density of insect pests 6. Therefore, a good knowledge of such interactions in general or regarding a specific control strategy would contribute to developing more effective alternative or complementary vector control methods including biological and genetic techniques. The weakness of the available control strategies is partly due to the lack of comprehensive understanding of biological interactions, including co-evolution mechanisms between mosquito vectors, pathogens and environment, and the role of mosquito vectors in the food chain of living organisms 4, 5. However, their burden on public health is still substantial. Intervention efforts such as environmental sanitation, indoor residual spray, and long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets have contributed to limiting the incidence of these diseases in the last decades 3. With the absence of reliable vaccines for effective prevention, the management of the main vectors appears to be the best strategy of control 3. Malaria, a parasitic infection transmitted by Anopheline mosquitoes, is responsible for more than 409,000 deaths in 2019 1 while dengue fever, a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, causes around 40,000 deaths every year 2. Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue are a significant threat to global health. Further investigations on standardized predation trials may lead to additional quality control tools for irradiated mosquitoes. Overall, there was no impact of laboratory treatments of sterile males on the relative risk of predation by the test predators, unless purposely exposed to double the required sterilizing irradiation dose. Predation propensity varied over days for the same individuals and between predator individuals. The selected predators effectively preyed on all mosquito species regardless of the treatment. Subsequently, the effects of chilling, marking, and irradiation, on predation rates were assessed. First, any inherent predation preferences regarding mosquito species and sex were evaluated. albopictus and Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes in a laboratory setting. The present study investigates the predation propensity of four mantis species ( Phyllocrania paradoxa, Hymenopus coronatus, Blepharopsis mendica, Deroplatys desiccata) and two gecko species ( Phelsuma standingi, P. Therefore, it is vital to understand which treatments are essential in minimizing risks to predation once released. Sterile males undergo several treatments. This technique involves releasing laboratory-produced sterile males into a target field site, and its effectiveness may be affected by the extent of adult mosquito predation. The sterile insect technique is a promising environmentally friendly method for mosquito control. You’ll poke a hole at the top of one and tie off a piece of string. Slide the two pieces together into the notches. You’re going to print out two of the pictures and color in both.Ĭut them both out, too, and then, you’re going to cut up from the bottom on one cut-out and down from the top on the other to about halfway. To make wall hangings out of my geometric pictures, you’ll again want to choose an illustration that is more of a finished design. Then, once the puffy paint is dry, you can carefully – very carefully! – peel the paint from the page and stick it in a sunny window. Let the puffy paint dry completely – so it might take a day or even two. You’re going to trace the design with puffy paint, and you can use a variety of colors or just stick to one hue. You’ll want to pick a picture that’s more of a complete design versus a pattern that takes up the entire page. Now, making window clings will be tricky but possible with my geometric pictures. You can also add embellishments, like beads, feathers, or even sequins sewed together to make the jewelry truly your own. Once they’re cool to the touch, you can attach the jewelry findings, like hooks for dangly earrings or chains and O-rings for necklaces. Then, cut them out and punch holes where you want the jewelry findings to go.īake per the instructions and let cool. You’ll print out the designs you want to use onto shrink sheets and color them in with markers. My geometric shapes would make awesome jewelry, from dangly earrings to statement piece necklaces. While this would be an excellent gift for a friend or family member, it’s also a fun activity for a group of kids – who can then swap puzzles! 7. You can even repurpose a cardboard box and put a picture of the finished product on the top. Then, you’ll cut out along those lines you just drew. You can make smaller shapes for teens and adults or bigger shapes for kids. Then, using a black Sharpie, draw directly over the picture, making puzzle-like shapes. Print out the picture you want to use and color it in. Use my geometric illustrations to make puzzles that are sure to stump even the most avid puzzler. You should have a durable stencil that you can hold up to the wall and paint over to create a beautiful pattern. You’ll paste them together and wait half an hour to an hour for the glue to dry. You’ll need to print the page out onto cardstock – twice.Ĭut out the “blank” spaces on both pages and line them up (you can clean up any cuts at this point). You can turn my geometric pictures into gorgeous wall stencils for the next time you’re repainting a room. This should create two flaps you can slip over the book’s existing cover. Set the book aside and fold the page inward, top and bottom, along the hashmark. Put your book over it and make little hash marks where the book’s top and bottom fall on the page. Print that off and place the picture face-down. To make these, if the picture you want to use isn’t just a pattern, you’ll want to copy and paste the entire illustration into a word processor document and center it on the right-hand side. My geometric pictures would make ravishing book covers, especially for a series where you want the covers to be similar but not exactly the same.
